MCC Athletics Featured in JUCO Review

The MCC athletic program, fresh off the most successful year in the college's illustrious history, was recently featured in the Special Academic Issue of the JUCO Review, the official publication of the National Junior College Athletic Association.

MCC was announced as the winner of the Pepsi NATYCAA Award, an honor given annually to recognize overall athletic program excellence by two-year colleges at the national level.  Monroe was the winner in the NJCAA Scholarship Division.

MCC compiled a total of 147.5 points to beat out Mesa Community College.  The Monroe women scored 78.0 points with national titles in women's soccer, women's basketball, and softball, as well as a third-place finish by the swimming team.  The MCC men scored 63.5 points with a national championship in golf, third-place finishes in swimming and hockey, and a seventh-place finish in tennis.

Dr. Susan Salvador, MCC Vice President of Student Services, and Murph Shapiro, Director of Athletics, were on hand at the awards luncheon.  Dr. Salvador and Mr. Shapiro posed for pictures with Pepsi Co. Vice President Rich Wilson, 2005-2006 NATYCAA President Lou Pullano, and keynote speaker Jim Larranaga, the head men's basketball coach at George Mason University.

MCC earned a beautiful trophy and was also rewarded $2,500 for the college's general scholarship fund.
