President's Wednesday Message

Last spring, one of the anonymous questions that came to me concerned the College's use of pronouns. The individual asked if MCC could become more inclusive by using and respecting the pronouns that individuals determine for themselves. It was a thoughtful request that considered the impact that our language has on the community we create. I asked MCC Chief Diversity Officer Calvin Gantt if the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council could review this request and come up with a plan for education and action.

Thanks to the individual who submitted the question and to the Council, today MCC is joining in International Pronouns Day. The goal of this day is to "celebrate people's multiple, intersecting identities" helping individuals to feel welcomed and communities to become more welcoming. The Human Rights Campaign Foundation has a very good overview about why pronouns matter. The message and work of International Pronouns Day align directly with our College's values of inclusiveness, collaboration, and empowerment.

Tabling and activities will run from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm today in the Flynn Campus Center Atrium, and at noon today, Kayden Miller (He/Him/His), associate education director for the Out Alliance, will speak in the Warshof Conference Center, Flynn Campus Center (Empire Room) from noon-1:00 p.m. The event will be live streamed to the Downtown Campus, High Falls A. I hope you will have an opportunity to stop by the atrium and attend the noon talk.

Next week Monday at noon in Downtown Campus 352, Sociology Professor Bethany Gizzi will hold a discussion following up on the activities of International Pronouns Day with a focus on creating an inclusive environment.

Emmy-winning writer, producer, and actress Lena Waithe has observed that "to be yourself is a truly revolutionary act." Let's support our students, colleagues, and community members in being themselves by recognizing them for who they are. My appreciation to all who helped put this year's International Pronouns Day celebration together and all who help MCC be welcoming and inclusive every day. Please share your thoughts on the blog.
