Please Share: Can students use the FSA ID right away?

If students already have a Federal Student Aid PIN, they can link their PIN to their FSA ID. This allows students to immediately use their FSA ID to access their personal information.

If students are creating an FSA ID for the first time, or if they don't link their FSA ID to their PIN, they may use their FSA ID to sign an original FAFSA, but nothing else.

To start a Renewal FAFSA or to make corrections to an existing FAFSA (including adding a school or accessing the IRS Data Retrieval Tool), student’s information (name, Social Security number, and date of birth) will need to be confirmed with the Social Security Administration (SSA). Once students information is verified with the SSA (one–three days from the date students apply), students will receive an e-mail indicating that the process is complete. At that time, students will be able to use their FSA ID to fully access their financial aid information.

Where can students use the FSA ID?
Once students’ information is verified with the Social Security Administration students will be able to use their FSA ID to access their personal information on any of the ED websites depending on what students need to do.

Students, and parents of dependent students, should apply for an FSA ID immediately at https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm.
