Quarantine Guidance Update

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently updated its guidance and provided additional options on releasing individuals from mandatory quarantine* as a result of an exposure to COVID-19. Mandatory quarantine is required when a person has been in close contact (within 6 ft. for 15 minutes or more) with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, whether or not displaying symptoms for COVID-19.

In response, the New York State Department of Health, SUNY and MCC have aligned its quarantine requirements. Quarantine for individuals exposed to COVID-19 can now end after 10 days, instead of 14, without a testing requirement if no symptoms have been reported during the quarantine period.

Individuals, including MCC students, faculty and staff, who are directed to quarantine must:

  • continue daily symptom monitoring through Day 14;
  • continue strict adherence to all recommended non-pharmaceutical interventions, including hand hygiene and the use of face coverings, through Day 14.
  • be advised that if any symptoms develop, they should immediately self-isolate and contact the Monroe County Department of Public Health (MCDOPH) or their health care provider to report this change in clinical status and determine if they should seek testing.

If you are directed by the MCDOPH to quarantine, please notify MCC Director of Human Resources Kristin Lowe at klowe5@monroecc.edu; students should contact MCC Health Services at healthsvc@monroecc.edu.

These quarantine requirements are also applicable to travelers per New York state’s COVID-19 Travel Advisory.

Please note: This guidance applies to individuals who have been exposed to COVID-19 and who have not tested positive. Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 must isolate (i.e., stay home or in a designated location until it is safe to be around others).

Types of Quarantine

  • Mandatory quarantine requirements apply when an individual has been within in 6 ft. for 15 minutes or more (direct exposure) with someone who has tested positive, whether or not the infected person displays symptoms for COVID-19.
  • Precautionary quarantine requirements apply when an individual has had a proximate (close but not direct) exposure to someone who has tested positive and who is not displaying symptoms.
