Jackson Katz -- a Huge Success at DCC!

Anti-violence educator Jackson Katz gave two very successful and powerful lectures on gender violence to standing-room only audiences at the Damon City Campus this past Wednesday, April 30th.  He also signed copies of his book, The Macho Paradox: How Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help (2006), until almost 11:30pm!

Katz’s visit was funded by ten MCC departments/groups, including the Anthropology/History/Political Science/Sociology Department, DCC Campus Center, Student Events and Governance Association (SEGA), Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society, the Office of the Dean of Liberal Arts Mike McDonough, the Office of the Dean of Academic Services at DCC Barbara Connolly, the Office of the Executive Dean at DCC Pete Otero, the Office of the President Tom Flynn, the Office of the Vice President of Academic Services Janet Glocker and the Office of the Vice President of Student Services Susan Salvador.  Still, there are so many others to thank – so thank you to all who contributed time, ideas and/or energy to make these events happen

The pictures attached were taken by Julie White, Assistant Director of Student Services, who also served on the planning committee.  The pictures include crowd shots of the evening lecture on the first floor of the Sibley Building, my introduction, Jackson speaking and his being honored by Pete Navratil, Carly Wise and Annie Lane of the local chapter of Stand Up Guys, a group whose mission is to engage more males (and females!) in preventing gender violence.  To learn more about Katz’s work, check out his website at HYPERLINK "

Again, thanks to all who helped, attended, encouraged and rewarded student attendance, and/or provided much-needed support in many other ways!  We did it!

Finally, in the words of “the great sociologist”, Michael Franti – “Power to the Peaceful!”
