Celebrate Mapping Our Place in the World: International Education Week and Geography Awareness Week November 14 - 18, 2016!
Kick off International Education Week and Geography Awareness Week TODAY, Monday, November 14th from 11:50 – 12:00 p.m. in the Campus Center Atrium.
Join our immigrant and international students as they parade into the Campus Center Atrium for the Flags of the Nations Parade Opening Ceremony. They will show the colors of the world as displayed in the flags of their nations. Students will be coming from Buildings 12 and 9 into the second floor of Building 3 and filter down into the lower level of the Atrium. Staff and faculty from Global Education and International Services and MCC’s Geography Program will officially open the week of events.
Geography Awareness Week highlights that fact that spatial thinking through maps is one of the most important skills that students can develop as they learn geography, earth and environmental sciences, global awareness, and so much more. Each year more than 100,000 Americans actively participate in Geography Awareness Week. Established by presidential proclamation more than 25 years ago, this annual public awareness program organized by National Geographic Education Programs encourages citizens young and old to think and learn about the significance of place and how we affect and are affected by it.
International Education Week celebrates the rich diversity our international and immigrants students bring to our campus and brings the world to all our students so they can be successful in a local and global context. It is a joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education in which colleges nationwide participate. This week at MCC is an opportunity to learn something new about the world (see The World Maps Gallery), talk with students about their home countries (check out Speed Travel on Tuesday), hear how students can use open source technology to create resilient communities (attend keynote address on Wednesday), and learn how your experiences with others different from yourself create value for your future job (join the Globalize Your Resume workshop on Thursday).
