RE:                  Student Learning Outcomes

DATE:             February 5, 2007

Among the suggestions that the Middle States Review Team made toward improving assessment of student learning at Monroe Community College was to “list measurable outcomes in course syllabi.” Many of our courses already comply with this, but many do not. In order to move toward compliance, I am asking faculty to ensure that student learning outcomes (SLOs) are in place for all of our courses. For multi-section, multi-instructor courses, departments will have to reach consensus. The Assessment Office will hold Student Learning Outcomes workshops in the coming months to assist faculty in the conversion of traditional objectives to SLOs.

The roll-out of this initiative will be done in two stages.  During the 2007-2008 academic year, departments will create and submit SLOs for all 200-level courses to the Curriculum Office and by the fall semester 2008 the syllabi of all 200-level courses at MCC must carry student learning outcomes. During the 2008-2009 academic year, departments will work on the SLOs for all 100-level courses and by the fall semester 2009 all 100-level courses will carry the SLOs as well.

The departmentally approved SLOs for each course should be submitted to the Curriculum Office via the Curriculum Database so that a permanent record of the outcomes can be maintained. These proposals will be created in the new form found in the Database under “Create Proposals; Course Learning Outcomes.” Submissions of SLOs which are already in place may begin immediately. Watch for notices of workshops to assist you in developing effective Outcomes statements in the Tribune in the weeks ahead.

Any questions may be directed to Dean Stuart Blacklaw in the Curriculum Office at 292-2189.

Thank you.
