MCC Professor and Student to Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro for the American Cancer Society

On Valentine’s Day, Professor of Anthropology Bonnie Lloyd and MCC student Salvatore Fantauzzo will leave Rochester for Africa with sixteen others to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro.  Members of the 2009 Journeys of Inspiration Kilimanjaro Cancer Climb team, Sal and Bonnie had never met before joining the team.

The climb will begin on Tuesday, February 17th and the team is scheduled to reach the summit at sunrise, February 23rd (11 PM, Feb. 22nd, Sunday night here in Rochester).  Both Sal and Bonnie have trained hard for the climb, and both realize that making the summit is not guaranteed -- fatigue, cold and altitude sickness can plague the best of athletes on "Kili," at 19340 feet, the highest "walkable" mountain in the world (no technical equipment needed).

Sal and Bonnie have each pledged to raise $2500 for the American Cancer Society, and both have incurred substantial trip costs for which they are fundraising.  You can help them climb by going to <"

Follow the climb with live updates at <"

***There will be a short piece on the climb on the Channel Eight News at Noon Program today, Wednesday, Feb. 11th.***
