Green Tip: World Food Day - October 16

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations World Food Day site:

  • More than 3 billion people (almost 40% of the world’s population) cannot afford a healthy diet.
  • 14% of the world’s food is lost due to inadequate harvesting, handling, storage and transit and 17% is wasted at the consumer level.
  • Climate change affects the rural poor, agricultural yields and productivity, and can contribute to changing nutrient composition of major staple crops, including decreases in proteins, and some essential minerals and vitamins.

What can we do?

Every time we eat, we participate in an agri-food system. We can influence what is produced by increasing our demand for sustainably produced nutritious foods. Individually we can be more sustainable in our daily actions by reducing food loss and waste.

  • Choose healthy, local, and seasonal food.
  • Learn how to grow food at home.
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables.
  • Respect food and the environment by wasting less food.
