Veterans' Faculty Mentor Program

In order to provide an increasingly Veteran-friendly environment for the hundreds of MCC students who are serving or who have served in the military – active duty, reserve or Guard - the Veterans’ Faculty Mentor Program has been launched for the 2011-2012 academic year.

VFMs will:
* Serve as a Veterans’ consistent point of contact at MCC
* Serve as a Veterans’ general sounding board and guide
* Help Veterans establish realistic expectations of professors, professional staff and peers
* Clarify academic standards and expectations
* Refer Veterans to the necessary college or community resources if/as circumstances arise

The purpose of the program is to provide a way for Veteran students to better negotiate the demands and dynamics of civilian university-level study in the hope this will increase their completion, transferability and (ultimately) professional success.

It would also be immeasurable helpful if teaching faculty would provide information to their students about this, and all Veteran Friendly programs on campus. To that end, please help us share the attached flier.

However, please do not ask student Veterans to identify themselves in class – I cannot stress this enough.

As a rule, student Veterans do not like to be singled out. Therefore, please either make copies of the attached flier for each of your individual students, project the electronic version for the whole class, or email the flier to your classes. Those of you who are teaching on-line are more than welcome to post the flier there as well, but do advise students that the mentoring process will be a face-to-face experience and will require students to come to campus.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me directly <
mailto:hwilliams@monroecc.edu>.

On behalf of the Veterans’ Faculty Mentor Program, and our student Veterans, we thank you all for your generous support.
