Mellas Returns from Teaching Marine Ecology Course in the Bahamas

Associate Professor Ernie Mellas, Biology, was a guest professor at The College of the Bahamas, Gerace Research Center on San Salvador Island for two weeks in January. Mellas helped to teach a marine ecology field course with Dr. Jim Haynes, SUNY Brockport, and Margaret Harris, Onondaga Community College. The course was a field study and research undergraduate course designed for students to study five different marine habitats as well as the geology of San Salvador Island.

Mellas plans to present a professional development session to the MCC community on teaching this course and the marine ecology of San Salvador Island during the Spring 2006 semester.

As a co-advisor of Outdoor Activities Unlimited Club, Mellas also organized and participated in his 10th annual three-day ski /snowboard trip before leaving for the Bahamas! Forty-four MCC students went on this year’s trip to Lake Placid, N.Y. Other trip ski/snowboard trip destinations have included Killington Vt., and Mt. Sutton, Quebec, Canada.
