IR's COVID-Era College-Wide Survey Results Section VI: Belongingness at & Satisfaction with MCC

As I mentioned in my Trib post on July 7, I would be sharing the results of IR's COVID-Era College-Wide Survey throughout July and August.  The following is Section VI of XI.

Note: Because I had a margin of error of +/-3%, the following results can be generalized to the larger population of people who were sent the survey.

When asked about the degree to which they feel they’re a part of the MCC community, more than half of the spring 2021 respondents indicated feeling that they belong (53%), are respected (67%), and have a sense of pride as an MCC student (55%).  But only two out of five (41%) reported having developed friendships with other students. It is possible that the latter finding may have something to do with being remote during the pandemic.

They were also asked, “How satisfied are you with MCC overall?”  Nearly three-quarters (74%) were satisfied or very satisfied.  Among sub-groups of respondents, there were differences by parental status and age group.  Specifically, Student-Parents and students age 25+ were more satisfied than Non-Parents and students age 24 and younger.

I then conducted deeper analysis designed to discover what predicts currently enrolled respondents’ satisfaction with MCC.  What I found is that the best predictors of students' satisfaction are:

   Before the pandemic, having...

  • family they could count on
  • classmates they felt connected to
  • faculty they could go to for help or with questions.

   In spring 2021...

  • having a plan for college
  • not feeling stressed, anxious, or depressed
  • being able to focus on and pay attention in class
  • feeling connected to faculty
  • having faculty who make their expectations clear
  • not being employed
  • knowing what they want to do after college.

   In general:

  • knowing how where, and when to purchase books, materials, and school supplies
  • feeling they belong at MCC, are respected at MCC, and have pride as an MCC student.
