Quotes That Inspire

Thanks to the members of our college community who submitted quotes that inspire them with a brief narrative about why. This week we hear from MCC Financial Aid Specialist Melissa Santiago.

"It always seems impossible until it's done." -- Nelson Mandela

Melissa shares the following:

"Many tasks are often daunting and it can be easy to fall into the trap of avoiding the responsibility thrust upon us because of the fear of failure or the stress of something that appears unattainable. The anxiety can paralyze and prevent one from achieving the end goal. I believe that one of the greatest feelings is that of achievement--once something is done, we can celebrate and reflect on how impossible the task appeared to be. I have this quote displayed in my instant message as a reminder to myself (and for others)--don't psych yourself out and prep for failure--you can accomplish anything with a little effort. Have a great day!"

Right on, Melissa. Your inspiring quote resonates for me at this time because we addressed a significant budget shortfall these last few weeks. Hearing at 8:00 A.M. on my first day as your interim president that we had to cut $8 million in less than two weeks could initially have fallen into the realm of the impossible from any perspective. Instead we reframed the challenge, worked collaboratively, and set a revised timeline to meet the overall goal.

While the FY21 budget proposal is not completely done, it is now within the realm of the possible, involving much sacrifice and problem-solving to be sure. We also face the challenge of balancing our FY22 budget--a shared task that we have every intention of meeting.

We welcome your quote and accompanying narrative about why the quote resonates for you. Submit your quotes to PresOffice@monroecc.edu. "Quotes that Inspire" are featured on Fridays in the MCC Daily Tribune.

Enjoy your weekend.
