Volunteers Needed - National Science Bowl - this Saturday at DCC!


*** Volunteers Needed – STEP Science Bowl 2008 – Feb 9th @ DCC ***

On Saturday February 9th, 24 teams of high school students will gather at Monroe Community College’s Damon City Campus (5th floor atrium, 8:00am – 3:30pm) to participate in the STEP Science Bowl 2008, a regional event for the Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl.  Teams of 5 students each, featuring talented youth from groups historically underrepresented and underserved in science, will go head to head in a fast- paced, jeopardy-style verbal competition where they will answer questions in all branches of science and math.  Groups traveling from Albany, Fredonia, and Buffalo will join Rochester teams in this high-energy event.  The winner of the STEP Science Bowl 2008 will receive an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to represent the region at the DOE’s National Science Bowl (May 1-6). 

*** We Need Your Help!  ***

In order to support this incredible event, we ask that you consider donating your time and talents.  Volunteers are needed in the following areas:

Moderator (12 needed) – Is THE person responsible for controlling each match.  It is important that you are familiar with how the game is played and all of the contest rules.  Goes over the important rules, reads questions during the match, and verbally recognizes students before they can answer.  MUST attend a training session for this position.  Should be comfortable with scientific terminology and have a loud speaking voice (no microphones!).  Time commitment – 8:00am – 1:30pm

Scorekeeper (12 needed) – Accurately awards points, records and announces the game score, and has team captains sign the score sheet.  MUST be able to stand during the competition.  MUST attend a training session for this position.  Time commitment – 8:00am – 1:30pm

Timekeeper (12 needed) – Operates the official competition time clock.  MUST attend a training session for this position – Time commitment – 8:00am – 1:30pm

Room Monitor (12 needed) – Faces audience during game play to ensure that there is no talking.  Replaces scrap paper during half-time.  Is available to act as a “runner” to command central if needed.  Time commitment – 8:00am – 1:30pm

Registration Desk (4 needed) – Time Commitment – 7:30 am – 9:00am (multiple people) and then 1 person on shift 9:00 – 3:30pm

Food Server Breakfast (4 needed) – Time Commitment – 7:00 am – 8:30 am
Food Server Lunch (6 needed) – Time Commitment -  1:00 pm – 2:30 pm
Photographer (2 needed) – takes official pictures of every team, takes pictures of event throughout the day, digital cameras provided.  Time Commitment – 8:00 am – 3:30 pm (in shifts)

Set Up Crew (4 needed) – can help on Friday, February 8th.
Clean Up Crew (4+ needed)
Buzzer Master (1 needed) – sets up and tears down buzzer systems, is available for problems during the matches.  7:30 am – 2:00 pm

All volunteers will receive breakfast and lunch (And t-shirts based on supply) – and are invited to stay for the entire program (8:00am – 3:30pm)

The STEP Science Bowl 2008 is sponsored by Monroe Community College, the Rochester Institute of Technology, the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, and the Lewis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation Program .  STEP (the Science & Technology Entry Program) is a New York State Education Department grant funded pre-collegiate program that aims to support and encourage middle and high school students from historically underrepresented and underrepresented groups to pursue college and careers in science, technology, math, health related fields and state licensed professions.
