Nobel Peace Prize Nominee to Speak about Saddam Hussein Trial

Michael P. Scharf, director of the Frederick K. Cox International Law Center at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, will speak at Monroe Community College’s 16th annual Kristallnacht program, entitled "Trading Justice for Peace," on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7:00 p.m. in the MCC Theater, Bldg. 4. Hosted by the Holocaust Genocide Studies Project, the program is free and open to the public.

A celebrated author and educator, Scharf served as a member of the elite international team of experts that trained the judges and prosecutors of the Iraqi Special Tribunal. The team was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 by six governments for its work during the prosecution of major war criminals such as Slobodan Milosevic, Charles Taylor and Saddam Hussein.

Scharf also served as a legal adviser to the U.S. Department of State and delegate to the United Nations Human Rights Commission during the first Bush and Clinton administrations.

Kristallnacht refers to Nov. 9, 1938, the “night of broken glass,” when Nazis destroyed Jewish synagogue and storefronts. This day is remembered by many as the starting point of the Holocaust.

Scharf will sign copies of the book he co-wrote with Gregory S. McNeal, "Saddam on Trial," following the presentation. For more information, please contact the Holocaust Genocide Studies Project at <<
