CSTEP Student Selected for the Brookhaven National Lab College Mini-Semester

Tyler Secrest (engineering) was selected to participate in the Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) College Mini-Semester from Monday, January 9th to Saturday, January 14th.  Tyler engaged in a lab-related research project and attended lectures on major federal research projects, including the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) and The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST).   Tyler also toured the BNL Center for Functional Nanomaterials which focuses on combining research in material science and chemical engineering; Tyler’s pathway.

Reflecting on the week at BNL, Tyler said, “During the mini-semester, it was inspiring to see how large the entire facility is and to learn about how many research projects are being conducted simultaneously.  I studied the BNL website and the research articles before I left but that is not the same as being on-site and seeing the facilities”.  Tyler has applied to the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship at BNL for the summer of 2017.

The Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) at MCC is an academic enrichment program that focuses on recruitment and retention from underrepresented individuals in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering Math (STEM), the licensed and health professions.  A component of CSTEP is student placement in research experiences.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow.
