Melany Silas Honored at University of Rochester


Assistant Professor Melany J. Silas received the “Outstanding Alumni” Award this past weekend at the University of Rochester. Silas was presented this award by the Black Student Union, in which Silas was an active member in her undergraduate years. Silas was recognized for her work with the Rochester community and her support to the University. Melany has been invited back on several occasions to speak to students at the University and was selected as a panel presenter to speak to current students and Alum of color at the inaugural Minority Student Affairs Alumni Panel Discussion during Meloria Weekend (UR’s Alumni Weekend) in October 2011. Silas also was a supporter of the Black Student Union as they ventured and obtained housing on the Fraternity Quad, making them the first group of color to receive a formal house on the Quad. Silas was honored to receive the award and provided encouraging and inspiring words at her acceptance.
