When I see a Veteran

The following poem was written and read by MCC Student Government Association Senator of Veteran's Relations Paula Barlow at MCC's Veterans Day Ceremony on Tuesday, November 10. We thank Paula and her three active-duty sons, and all of our active-duty and Veteran students for their service and leadership. This poem is published today with permission as Veterans Appreciation Week continues.

When I see a Veteran
By Paula Barlow

When I see a veteran, I am filled with pride, and
when I see a veteran, I see grit, and grind!

No matter the branch, you are not alone, for you have achieved victory and not a stone.

I see a veteran struggle for something many take for granted, life, freedom, and a peaceful night, these battles, many would not fight!

Your battles you fought all alone, and some with brothers and sisters by your side,
never forgotten your will, strength, and fire inside!

I look at a veteran, I see patriotism and sacrifice.

When I see a veteran, the battles fought and won,
You are the foundation of all our freedoms!

This country will never forget the sacrifices you have made,
Leaving love ones behind, only to contemplate!

One thing for sure and many things for certain,
MCC will be here till the end, to make sure of your success, acknowledge your wins that you surpass!

We will fight with you, and for you to see your victory laps, on the books and in your lives!

The struggles that lie beneath, are those struggles MCC will feat.

Failure is not an option, for we all know this, they may knock you down, but you will get up again.

So here we will be when you need that hand
Never will MCC leave a brother or sister in demand!
