Dr. Burt-Nanna Discusses the FWD Center on WBTA Radio

President Burt-Nanna was a recent guest on "Main & Center," a program hosted by the Genesee County Economic Development Center on WBTA radio.

In her conversation with host Jim Krencik, she discussed the FWD Center and the ways that employers, high school students, and other residents across the Finger Lakes region can benefit from the programs and services offered at the new facility. She also talked about the importance of introducing a diversity of students to STEM fields to increase the number of females and underrepresented individuals in these professions.

The segment aired on Friday, April 29. A clip can be found on YouTube. Key takeaways from Dr. Burt-Nanna:

  • What makes our region unique is what Monroe Community College and partners spanning higher education, industry, business, and local and state government are doing collaboratively to close the skills gaps and to better meet the needs of today’s students and businesses.
  • Apprenticeships are among the many offerings at the FWD Center that have seen a surge in interest over the past three years.
  • To ensure all students stay on the path to their educational goals, learners at the FWD Center will have access to the same wraparound supports available to MCC students participating in credit-bearing programs – including counseling and tutoring as well as basic needs services, such as food and bus passes.
  • As a female who came up in the STEM field of technology, we want to continue to expose students across gender and racial groups to different career paths and opportunities and to demystify the professions. Our opportunity and challenge is to make sure through the recruitment processes that individuals can see themselves in these professions where their skillsets, their diversity are needed for our community.

"Main & Center" can be heard starting at 8:30 a.m. on the last Friday of each month on 100.1-FM and 1490-AM and online at wbtai.com.
