Let Our Students Know: FSA ID Frequently Asked Questions

When should students get an FSA ID?
Students, and parents of dependent students, should apply for an FSA ID at any time at https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm .

If students don't have one by the time they fill out the FAFSA, students will be prompted to apply for one. However, if a student thinks the Social Security Administration (SSA) might have the wrong name or date of birth for the student in its records, they will need to go to www.ssa.gov <https://www.ssa.gov/>  now to find out how to correct any errors. Students’ information must be correct with the SSA before their FAFSA or FSA ID can be processed.

Does the FSA ID expire?

The FSA ID username does not expire, but the FSA ID password will expire every 18 months unless students change it.

What if students forget their FSA ID username or password?
If students have forgotten their username or password, they should not worry. When students log-in on the ED site, they will find links that give them the option of retrieving their username or password through their verified e-mail address or by successfully answering their challenge questions.

What if the FSA ID was lost or stolen?
If the FSA ID is lost or stolen, students must update their username and password by selecting "Edit My FSA ID" from the log-in page and or contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243).
