There Are No Withdrawal Extensions for Summer

Summer is filled with ‘last day to withdraw from an individual course’ deadlines due to all the start and end date vagaries of the semester. During the fall and spring semesters we allow students to withdraw for about ten days after the deadline WITH THE PERMISSION OF THEIR INSTRUCTOR ONLY, allowing the instructor to determine whether the student has a good reason for missing the deadline.

In the summer it is almost impossible to keep up with all the individual withdrawal deadlines for all the various end dates of summer courses. We would never be able to throw the whole withdrawal extension process into the mix and even hope to be able to keep things straight.

With room scheduling I’ve often thought we should have a free for all and just let people stake out their classrooms on the first day of classes, planting a flag with their name and class meeting times outside the doors. I think this would be a good idea for summer withdrawals also; just keep processing them and hope it all works out. Unfortunately, Betsy is NOT in favor of the ‘whatever’ approach to record keeping. I guess that is why she is the boss…and why I never will be.

In the absence of a withdrawal free for all, R&R will not accept any late withdrawals from students. If a student feels he/she has a legitimate reason to withdraw after the deadline we will explain to them that we cannot accept a late withdrawal and advise them to speak to their professor about it. Once the withdrawal deadline passes, any grade put on a student’s record should be determined by the professor and not R&R. If you agree that the student has good reason to be withdrawn late, you may withdraw them on your class list/grading form in Banner Self Service. You do not need to sign anything from the student and no forms need to be returned to R&R.

The withdrawal deadlines for the four big summer sessions are:

Friday, June 23           Last day to withdraw from a First Day Session Course

Wednesday, June 28   Last day to withdraw from a First Evening Session Course

Friday, August 4         Last day to withdraw from a Second Day Session Course

Thursday, August 10  Last day to withdraw from a Second Evening Session Course

Feel free to email me if you have any questions: <mailto:dbenjamin@monroecc.edu>. If you would like to vote in favor of either the withdrawal or the room scheduling free for all, let me know. I am collecting ammunition for my next go-round with Betsy!
