Provost and Vice President Academic Services Dr. Michael McDonough discussed at the Faculty Senate meeting this past Thursday, November 17, 2011 his vision for general education as a program that provides students meaningful opportunities to make connections through an iterative experience across the disciplines in order for students to complete their degree programs with the knowledge, skills and abilities required for successful transfer and careers. The general charge to the committee from the Provost and Faculty Senate President Christine Abbott is to reimagine, reinvent, reengineer the college’s approach to general education.
This two-year committee effort will be led by Faculty Senate Curriculum Committee Chair Mark Ernsthausen, and will incorporate and build on the work already achieved by the Curriculum Committee in its General Education Redefinition project. In addition, the committee will engage in a variety of activities of original inquiry, investigating alternative models for general education programs, and also review and integrate as appropriate the findings of the Liberal Arts and Sciences degree programs evaluations.
If you are interested in contributing to the two-year redesign of MCC’s general education program, then please advise your department chairperson and submit your name to Dean Charlotte Downing who will facilitate the appointment process. Twelve members will be selected by Chris Abbott and Mike McDonough within the next two weeks.
The Committee will begin its work with its inaugural meeting on Friday, December 9, 2011, 3:00 to 4:00 pm, in Room 3-115 and will continue to meet over the course of four semesters, until the final committee report is delivered to the Provost and the Faculty Senate President on February 1, 2014.
