Calling all "Kindred" Souls

Julie Damerell in Transitional Studies is looking for individuals who are reading or planning to read Kindred by Octavia Butler, the "If All of Rochester Read the Same Book" selection. Students in her TRS 103 classes will be reading it, and part of their work will include corresponding with someone else on campus who is also reading the book. The students are required to send five e-mails or letters over the course of the semester. They will get credit by turning in copies of what they send.

This is a good opportunity for students to become involved in authentic writing and to be part of a community of readers. The amount of time required from the campus reading partner is up to the individual; responses could be as short as a sentence or two.

Anyone willing to be a part of the program can e-mail Julie Damerell at jdamerell@monroecc.edu <mailto:jdamerell@monroecc.edu> with a simple "yes." Students will receive only the name and campus address/email of their campus reading partners. Students will begin reading the book during the second week of classes.

For more information about the book and the "If All of Rochester Read the Same Book" project, go to the Writers & Books website, <https://wab.org>
