President's Wednesday Message

The Assembly and House budget bills this year fell far short of the requested $285/FTE increase: the Assembly is recommending $100; the Senate $50. If history holds, we are likely on track to receive just $75/FTE increase, since our funding is typically the average between both houses.

As base aid has failed to keep pace with even basic inflation, MCC has taken multiple measures to cut and control costs, moving to increase tuition only when absolutely necessary. We know what will happen without sufficient state investment: more cuts and more tuition increases. We need to change this picture.

MCC's shared governance leaders joined together last week to send a single letter to our delegation, leadership of the Assembly and Senate, and leadership of the higher education committee. The text of that letter is attached. Showing unity and being active in voicing our call for increased investment is essential as the budget session moves into its last days.

You may also wish to reach out directly to your legislators. Both SUNY and NYSUT have made that easy for you. Consider using the SUNY sign on letter or the NYSUT take action fax form (or both).

I thank our shared governance leaders for coming together on the critical issue of increased community college base aid. The state's investment in our College is an investment in our students. We all agree: they deserve it!

If you have additional ideas or comments, please share them on the blog.
