Community Provides Over $11 Million, Surpasses Goal

Over 2,200 individuals, organizations and foundations were honored by the Monroe Community College Foundation on Sept. 30 for their help in surpassing the foundation’s $10 million goal for Building on Success: The Campaign for Monroe Community College. The achievement of raising $11,015,640 was celebrated at a donor wall dedication ceremony in the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center.

“The momentum created by our corporate partners and friends was unstoppable,” said MCC President R. Thomas Flynn. “Sustainability is the backbone of every successful enterprise. The efforts of our foundation, and especially the campaign cabinet, ensure that MCC can sustain its high quality programs.”

The campaign was launched in 2001 with a $1.75 million lead gift from Xerox Corporation. One of the largest fundraising initiatives ever launched on behalf of an American community college, the Building on Success campaign sought private resources to support academic, athletics, campus life, allied health and advanced technology initiatives. New learning infrastructures and improvements to the college’s libraries are also now possible due to the success of the campaign.

The donor wall contains the names of all campaign donors and images of the college initiatives supported by the campaign. The morning’s dedication was preceded by a tribute to the campaign’s founding chair Gilbert J. Hatch, a Xerox executive and director of the MCC Foundation Board, who passed away in August 2004. James J. Ward, a member of the board’s executive committee and former chair of the board, led the campaign to its successful conclusion.

MCC Trustee Michael Nuccitelli welcomed donors by saying “From my vantage point, standing here before you, I see the faces of a caring community—one that has successfully risen to the challenge.”

Brighton Campus Student Government President Owen Arthur thanked donors on behalf of students and provided his perspective as a student leader.

“Together we have inspired students and business and civic leaders to take a fresh look at Monroe Community College,” said MCC Foundation President Brenda Babitz. “The Building on Success Donor Wall represents the positive impact our donors continue to have on our community.”

The donor wall, pictured below, is located in the Bausch & Lomb Lobby of the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center. It contains the names of donors to Building on Success, the most successful campaign in the college's history.
