Congratulations to the 2010 English Department Essay Award Winners


The Student Awards Committee is pleased to congratulate the following students on their excellent writing:

Rice Award for Best Essay
Kate Dooley won 1st place for her essay “The Naturalness of Walking in Rebecca Sonit’s ‘The Orbits of Earthly Bodies.’”
Pam Howe won 2nd place for her essay “The Pressure to Settle. Down.”

Cooney Award for Best Literary Essay
Allison Skillman won 1st place for her essay “A Heroine of Unconventional Means.”
Sara Helman won 2nd place for her essay “The Language Condition: Thematic Analysis of Communication’s Function in Homebody/Kabul.”

Cloos Susskind Award for Best Poem
Ian Smith won 1st place for his poem “Night Run.”
Elizabeth Loudermilk won 2nd place for her poem “From Lincoln to JFK.”

Langlois Award for Best Short Fiction
Pam Howe won 1st place for her story “Because the Mutilated Still Need Love.”
Elizabeth Loudermilk won 2nd place for her story “Thin Mint Pest Removal.”

Shaw Award for Best Essay
Laron Hagan won 1st place for his essay “I’ll be Gone.”
Pam Howe won honorable mention for her essay “Sound Effects.”
Christine Teague won honorable mention for her essay “Dirt Pile Queen.”

The McMurray Award for Best Philosophical Essay was without a winner this year.

The Sixth Act recognizes the following students for their winning one-act plays:
David Buttle won for his one-act play “The Story About Troy.”
Aaron Fleisher won for his one-act play “Swimming.”
Katie Mulbry won for her one-act play “A Happy Ending.”
