Radio Station Promotes Job-Readiness Training Programs

Last week, Randy Gorbman of WHAM-AM (1180) mentioned the advanced manufacturing training programs in his business report.

To address the critical shortages of middle-skill manufacturing workers in the Rochester region, MCC is providing accelerated technical education and hands-on training in machining and optics fabrication this summer to unemployed and underemployed residents in the nine-county region.

During eight weeks of training led by MCC faculty, about 18 participants in the Machining/CNC Job-Readiness Training Program become familiar with the tools and processes of manual metal fabrication as they learn to operate lathes, mills and computer numerical control equipment to manufacture parts at MCC’s Applied Technologies Center. Their training began on July 2 and continues through Aug. 23.

In the six-week Optics Fabrication Job-Readiness Training Program led by industry professionals, about 10 participants will follow the same basic curriculum, with a focus on optical fabrication equipment and techniques, such as grinding and polishing precision lenses. Training takes place in MCC’s Optics Fabrication Lab in the Gleason Hall of Science and Technology today, July 9, through Aug. 16.

Training is provided at no cost to the participants. MCC worked with company representatives within RTMA, RRPC and FAME to develop the curriculum and arrange worksite tours. RochesterWorks!, Finger LakesWorks and community-based organizations were involved in selecting and prescreening candidates for the program.
