New Finger Lakes Workforce Development Center Coming to MCC Downtown Campus

Leaders from Monroe County, MCC and New York state on Monday converged to announce the future establishment of the Finger Lakes Workforce Development (FWD) Center at MCC's Downtown Campus.

The proposed 50,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art center will be housed on the fifth and sixth floors of the campus, in currently undeveloped space, and will support an evolving list of short-term training programs for technology-oriented careers that are most in demand in our region.

Fast-track, industry-driven education and training will enable individuals of all ages to earn stackable credentials and progress toward an associate degree. Potential training opportunities include programs in mechatronic systems, automation and robotics, industrial internet of things, and skilled trade technologies. A portion of the dedicated space will be used for apprenticeship training.

Housed in flexible learning spaces outfitted with portable, cutting-edge training equipment, the FWD Center will allow MCC to respond more rapidly to high-demand, high-tech fields, creating programs that meet the evolving needs of industry in the years to come.

"Having the Workforce Development Center at our Downtown Campus positions MCC to play a greater role in improving employers' competitiveness and the region's economic vitality," said Dr. Kress. "This location also provides students with access to MCC's support services, helping even more individuals and their families build brighter economic futures."

Currently, MCC offers a wide array of workforce development programs, including traditional and accelerated offerings. This includes Monroe County's LadderzUP program, which works collaboratively with local employers to develop targeted training programs for job seekers. Many of these existing programs will be consolidated into the new FWD Center.

Design and construction of the proposed center will be managed by Monroe County, and paid for by $11.4 million in funding from SUNY and New York state.
