Chancellor Malatras Congratulates 2020 SUNY Police Chiefs Association Award Recipients

45 University Police Members Honored For Heroism, Life-Saving Efforts, and Professional Service in Virtual Ceremony, Two SUNY Students Awarded Scholarships by SUNY Police Chiefs Association

Yesterday, Jan. 20, State University of New York Chancellor Jim Malatras offered his congratulations to the 45 recipients of the 2020 SUNY Police Chiefs Awards. The group was recognized at a virtual ceremony this week.

The 45 award recipients range from longtime university police leaders, investigators, and lieutenants with decades of service, to brand new officers getting their first glimpse into life in law enforcement, to technical specialists whose invaluable expertise keeps SUNY university police departments running. Members of university police are given awards for heroism, life-saving efforts, and professional service. Two SUNY students were also awarded scholarships by the SUNY Police Chiefs Association.

Among those recognized at this year’s virtual ceremony were longtime Stony Brook University Deputy Chief Bruce Redden, a 20-year veteran of the State University Police who died from cancer in January 2020, and Buffalo State University Police Chief Peter Carey, who was given the Lifetime Achievement Award.

“On behalf of the State University of New York, I want to extend my sincere congratulations to this year’s award recipients and give thanks to all of our law enforcement personnel who work tirelessly each and every day to keep us safe,” said Chancellor Malatras. “2020 was a year of unprecedented challenge, and you managed to save lives, deescalate situations that could have turned deadly, and serve as role models. We asked you to do more, and you stepped up without hesitation. Today and every day you are a great source of pride for our entire university system.”

State University Police Commissioner Frank Lawrence said,In a year full of tragedy, separation, and anxiety about the future, the men and women of our university police departments—through selfless actions both big and small—provided light and hope when we needed it most. My heartfelt congratulations to this year’s award recipients. You all exemplify the excellence and sacrifice that exists across our University Police force.”

SUNY Police Chiefs Association President and University at Buffalo Police Chief Chris Bartolomei said,It’s always a pleasure and honor to recognize the professional service, life-saving efforts, and acts of heroism of our members. Their actions to protect and serve—no matter what the world is facing—are a reminder of why we chose this profession.”
