Congratulations to the 2012 English and Philosophy Department Student Writing Award Winners


The Student Awards Committee is pleased to congratulate the following students on their excellent writing:

Rice Award for Best Essay
-- Anna Price won 1st place for her essay “Free at Last?: Cultural Ambivalence Regarding Race, Gender, and Fat in the Shifting Imagery of the Aunt Jemima Icon.”

-- Collin Henrie won 2nd place for his essay “Wildwood By-the-Sea.”

Cooney Award for Best Literary Essay
-- Anna Price won 1st place for her essay “’Wild Women Don’t Get the Blues’: Angela Carter’s Feminist Re-Interpretation of Little Red Riding Hood in “The Company of Wolves.””

-- Patrick Riordan won 2nd place for his essay “The Strain of Social Tissue and the Unappealing Nature of Society.”

Cloos Susskind Award for Best Poem

-- Pam Howe won 2nd place for her poem “Swear Words.”

Langlois Award for Best Short Fiction
-- Christine Gallion won 1st place for her story “Confessions of a Health Inspector.”
-- Dennis Conolly won 2nd place for his story “Goats in Grocery Stores.”

Shaw Award for Best Essay
-- Melissa Perensky won 1st place for her essay “The Art of Companionship: How an Animal Saved My Life.”

The McMurray Award for Best Philosophical Essay
-- Anna Price won 1st place for her essay “The Religion/Science Debate.”
