Let Your Students Know About Scholarship Opportunities Offered Through the Department of Mathematics


The MCC Mathematics Department offers several different scholarships each year and is currently accepting the applications for any of the following scholarship opportunities:

BEYOND THE FORMULA ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Student may qualify for this scholarship if he/she:
Is a current student at MCC
Has successfully completed at least 30 credit hours at MCC.
Has successfully completed at least 6 credit hours of mathematics including MTH 160 – Statistics I or the equivalent and have completed or be currently taking MTH 161 – Statistics II.
Has a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher.
Has a Mathematics G.P.A. of 3.35 or higher.
Is planning on an academic major in statistics, statistics education or a field that would require further study and use of statistics.

JAN Z. WIRANOWSKI ENDOWED RENAISSANCE SCHOLARSHIPS

There are five J. Z. Wiranowski Renaissance Scholarships. They are grouped in the following four categories:
math
math-based science
universal humanism of hope
non-traditional academic background and/or out-of-the-ordinary life experiences

NOTE:
The distribution of the awards among the applicants will depend on the qualifications of the applicants. Hence, it is conceivable that in any given year all five recipients could be receiving the same type of scholarship.

 An applicant may be awarded a maximum of two scholarships: one from the math or math-based science categories and one from the non-math categories. If more than one scholarship is applied for, a separate application must be submitted for each scholarship.

Although individual scholarship requirements vary, any full – time student currently enrolled at Monroe Community College may be eligible for the scholarships if he/she:

MATH AND MATH-BASED SCIENCE:
Has successfully completed at least 12 credit hours.
Has successfully completed at least 4 credit hours of mathematics at a level of Calculus I or higher, and must be currently enrolled either in a mathematics course or a mathematics related course at Monroe Community College.
Has a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.3 or higher.
Is planning on an academic major in mathematics, mathematics education, or a mathematics related field.

UNIVERSAL HUMANISM OF HOPE
Has successfully completed at least 12 credit hours.
Has a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.3 or higher.
Has successfully completed application form, including essay
Is a creative thinker, committed to human rights and interests – on a planetary (global) scale, within the context of the Universe of which we are part

Applicants are encouraged to read about the concept of  The Universal Humanism of Hope, as outlined in the paper and the flowchart written on this subject by the sponsor of the scholarship, Professor Jan (Yahn) Wiranowski (Contact Professor Wiranowski (8-618), extension 2962, or inquire in the Math Department Office  (8-510), to obtain the materials of interest.

Applicants must have successfully completed (or are in the process of completing by the end of the current semester, or intend to complete by the end of the following semester) at least one course in at least half of the categories listed in the Table of required courses, which can be found at https://www.monroecc.edu/depts/math/scholarships.htm#jzw .

Non-traditional academic background and/or out-of-the-ordinary life experiences

Has successfully completed at least 12 credit hours.
Has a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.3 or higher.
Is able to demonstrate a degree of tangible accomplishments in the areas of interest and the field of specialization.
Is able to show that she/he possesses some of the attributes and/or life experiences as sampled here (or the like):  creativity, passion(s), vision, determination; visible  progress and a clear movement toward accomplishing his/her goals or satisfying intellectual curiosity; strong and demonstrable commitment to hard work; determination and ability to face adversities; meaningful life experiences, ranging from being subjected to persecution, discrimination, abuse, or the like, to performing acts of courage, or having significantly and positively impacted the life of other human beings; other noble acts, noteworthy deeds or attributes. 

Has a plan and a set of criteria for the continued education that are linked to his/her hitherto accomplishments and/or personal history. This may include well justified changes of direction in life. In fact, if such a change is real, practical and useful, it is very welcome; in accordance with the basic fact of life that change is a must, so we must change.  

Has successfully completed (or is in the process of completing by the end of the current semester) courses that are relevant to his/her professional objectives, in order to qualify for the award. It is left to the applicant to convincingly elaborate on this compliance in a separately typed and signed statement.

Complete applications with essays and recommendations are due in the Mathematics Department Office no later than 4:00 p.m., Thursday, March 31, 2011.
