Dean Involved in Writing Million Dollar Grant for the Modern Language Association

With help from Dean Michael Jacobs, the Modern Language Association (MLA) was awarded a grant totaling one million dollars from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to strengthen the teaching of English at access-oriented institutions. The grant will run over three years by funding nine regional summer institutes for doctoral students interested in faculty positions at community colleges and comprehensive 4-year universities that prioritize access over selectivity in admissions. Last summer, Dean Jacobs was invited by the MLA Executive Director to join the committee working on the grant submission. The committee included faculty from two and four-year schools; they worked to design institutes that will help 144 doctoral students with their writing pedagogies. The first institutes will take place this coming summer at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and the University of Washington, Seattle.
