High School Students from MCC Upward Bound Receive Project Seed Research Internships from RIT

Over the past three years, MCC Upward Bound (UB) has encouraged participants to apply for Project SEED internships. Project SEED is a national program that arranges summer research fellowships in math and science. Locally, the Rochester chapter of the American Chemical Society supports the program, which is coordinated by Professor Michel of RIT. This summer, five UB students participated in the six-week program.

Hafsa worked with Dr. Matt Miri on creating sustainable polymers. Karett researched ways to stop the E. coli virus from growing in medical environments with Dr. Michel. Halima worked with Professor Bren to look at how specific bands of E. coli could be used positively. Channing researched ways to transform food waste into solid fertilizer, called biochar, to retain important nutrients like phosphate and ammonium with Dr. Babbit and Dr. Rodriguez-Alberto. Dr. Gleghorn directed Mariana to use 6xHis-tag to identify the toxic E. coli protein VapC in various gel samples.

The participants presented their research findings and received a stipend for their participation.
