Teleconference "Cheating and Plagiarism Using the Internet"

On Thursday, April 3, 2003 Educational Technology Services and the Distance Learning Committee will be sponsoring the teleconference "Cheating and Plagiarism Using the Internet" produced by Dallas/PBS Adult Learning Service.  You are invited to join them.

The Internet has not only made it easier for students to "cut and paste" their way to a finished essay, but to purchase term papers, custom researching and writing services.  Meanwhile, technology empowers faculty to detect plagiarism with online services, free software and search engine techniques.  However, the best way to discourage and prevent cheating and plagiarism are not "high-tech," but pedagogical: teaching students to cite sources properly, getting involved in all stages of their writing, and, perhaps most importantly, carefully and creatively constructing assignments.  Developing and enforcing honor codes are vital.  This program will offer solutions to the increase of cheating and plagiarism by: defining the scope and causes of the problem; describing ways faculty and administrators can require, teach and model ethical behavior; demonstrating strategies for detecting plagiarism; presenting reactive methods; and, suggesting proactive approaches to dissuading and minimizing cheating and plagiarism.

Dr. Jeff Bartkovich will introduce the program and lead a brief pre-session.  Following the telecast Dr. Bartkovich, Dean Chet Rogalski, and English/Philosophy Department Chair Bob DeFelice will conduct a brief wraparound session.
