The Annual Fall Classroom Scramble

When I first started working here 20 years ago an instructor called me to ask for a room change and told me, “I just turned 50 and I don’t feel like putting up with things I don’t like anymore.”  All I could think was, if you just turned 50 should you even be working anymore? Well, on Tuesday, I turned 60. And I’m still working. And I feel everyone’s pain with having to put up with things they don’t like.  If at all possible, I’d like everyone to be happy with their classroom.  This most likely is not possible but it’s fun to try to make it happen.

If you have already requested a room change and haven’t seen any positive action that doesn’t mean I’m ignoring you. Some changes are easy to make.  Some I put on the back burner and wait for cancellations and other people to move around until something opens up. If I get to the point where I know I can’t fill your request I will let you know. No news is good news. No news means I’m still working on it.

Room requests should be sent by email and can be very simple. It’s important to tell me the course you want changed (many people don’t!) and it helps if you include the CRN so I don’t need to look it up. Here’s the perfect request:

I need a smart classroom for ENG 123-321, CRN 81651, MWF 8:00-8:50.

Here’s my least favorite request:

Please (I DO like the please) move all my courses to smart classrooms.

Now I have to look up what courses the person is teaching in addition to the CRNs. It’s only human to put this request aside in favor of the one above that’s so much easier to do.

I’m deeply immersed in piles of room requests. If you check your schedule on Banner you’ll most likely see some changes soon.  As usual, we will be tight for computer labs. If you are scheduled in a lab and don’t need it, please let me know as soon as you can. Computer lab rooms are 11-101, 11-102, 11-104, 11-109, 11-111. If you teach an OCP lecture and I have you scheduled in a lab which you don’t need, please let me know.

Students will be receiving their fall schedules via email the week of August 29. Although we can run updated schedules and post room change signs for changes made after that date, it’s better to have the majority of changes done when the initial run of schedules is mailed.

We are in this process together. Let me know what you need and I’ll do my best to get it for you!
