RBJ Article on New Construction Institute

The Rochester Business Journal ran an article in its Friday edition on the new Construction and Design Institute at MCC. Tom Fitch, Workforce Development program director, was interviewed for the story.

The institute centralizes community resources in the architectural design and construction fields to provide a collaboration of services, including credit courses to prepare students for a career in the industry, seminars and training for current employees to maintain and surpass required certifications, a forum in which professionals can network, and a unified voice and collective marketing to change the perceived image of the industry.

Several courses will be offered through the institute this fall, including two courses that start today. Construction Essentials shares the basic skills found on most construction-related job sites, including training in blueprint reading, basic rigging and construction safety. The 15-week course is geared to women and men of all ages interested in starting a career in the construction industry. And the 15-week Project Supervision course, focusing on workers who have been in the industry about a decade, will give a broad brush of understanding to those with no more than entry-level experience in management who are looking to gain valuable knowledge in project supervisory roles.
