TCC: Spring Conversation #2 This Wednesday, March 16

Please join us on Wednesday, March 16, 12:00-1:00 PM, on Zoom, for "Empathy: Start With Yourself!," facilitated by April Daniels (ESOL/TRS).

As we spend the year exploring our profession in the context of care-work, it is important to examine how self-care and care for others are inextricably linked. Compassion and empathy exist not only for themselves, but they also lend themselves to learning. The confluence of wisdom and compassion is where measurable growth manifests. If we cultivate compassion and empathy, and then apply that to our curriculum and pedagogy, then in theory, we (and by extension, our content!) will be so much more accessible, but in a wise way that does not infringe on boundaries and deplete everyone involved. We must begin with cultivating empathy for one’s self.  Once this is established, extending empathy to others occurs more naturally and affects everything we think, say, do, and create (such as lessons, assignments, course information sheets, course policies, and so forth).

This Conversation continues the TCC's programming for the 2021-22 theme, Pedagogies of Care. We will focus first on strategies for developing empathy for ourselves, and then consider how this very practically translates into extending it to our students in meaningful ways that may promote a sense of belonging and, therefore, retention.

Zoom info is in the attachment, as well as on the Events calendar.

All faculty and staff are welcome!
