Scholarships Available for Criminal Justice and Paralegal Students


The Law and Criminal Justice Department of Monroe Community College is delighted to announce the availability of several scholarships, ranging from $200 to $500, to CRJ students demonstrating academic excellence.

Eligibility Requirements
1. Open to any student enrolled in any of the Criminal Justice and Paralegal degree programs.
2. Scholarship Criteria:

a. One scholarship is open only to first semester students enrolled in CRJ 101 and CRJ 103. No GPA required.
b. For at least one scholarship, students must have completed at least 16 hours of courses required in the Law & Criminal Justice Program and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00.
c. For the other scholarships, students must have completed at least 26 hours of courses required in the Law & Criminal Justice Program and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00.

3. Selection of the winners will be decided by the Law & Criminal Justice Department faculty (and, the case of the Fuino award, a representative of the Monroe County Deputy Sheriff’s Association) and will be based upon the essay plus review of academic performance.

Essay Topic: On Wednesday, October 6, 2010, the United States Supreme Court heard arguments in the case of  Snyder v Phelps, a case in which the Phelps family, in association with their church, staged a protest outside the funeral of Matthew Snyder, a Marine killed in action in Iraq. The attachment are excerpts of the opinion of the US 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in this case.  If you were on the Supreme Court, would you decide this case in favor of the Snyders or the Phelps?  Write a two-page essay stating your position on this case and support your position.

Essay Requirements:
·   Essay must include your name, student ID #, and a daytime phone number.
·   Essay must be in Times New Roman font size 12, double line space, with a maximum of two-pages. 
·   Essay must be submitted electronically only to CRJ Department Secretary as a Word document to <mailto:pschirano@monroecc.edu> with SCHOLARSHIP in the e-mail subject line. Hard copies will not be accepted.
