TCC: Register now for 'Theory in Action' - an asynchronous course on retention promoting practice

The Teaching and Creativity Center (TCC) is pleased to offer our new “Theory in Action” course again this spring!

What is the course?

As a part of my (Gena’s) '20-21 professional leave project, I developed an online professional development course based on the faculty practices that promote student retention at MCC, known as the CARE practices. This course was initially designed to meet requests from adjuncts for sustained asynchronous learning opportunities.

For an introduction to purpose, expectations and flow of the course, please view this 7 minute video.

What will I get out of the course?

Paritcipants will dig into the CARE practices, learn more about the theories and evidence behind them. A special benefit of the course is that it is cohort based, and you will be able to discuss how you are applying your learning with colleagues from around the college.

Who is the target audience?

All levels of teaching experience are welcome. The course is designed to meet faculty wherever they are and help them move forward. Though this course was created to meet the needs of our adjunct faculty, full-timers may join too.

What is the time commitment?

The course is 9 weeks long, and you are expected to spend about 2 hours each week on the modules. There are four content modules where you will learn more about each of the CARE practices. Following each content module is a reflection module where you will have time to apply your learning and discuss your results with colleagues. The final module involves time to synthesize your learning throughout the whole course.

The course will run from February 12 - April 29. The course will pause over breaks, though you are welcome to take use that time to read more leisurely.

How do I sign up?

Please send an email to Gena Merliss: emerliss@monroecc.edu

What are the CARE practices??

A few years ago, Jason Anderson (CHE/GEO) completed a qualitative research study with faculty from MCC who had the lowest rates of student withdrawals in their classes. Through class observations and interviews, four themes emerged as faculty practices that promote student retention at MCC. These CARE practices are attached.
