The World Maps Gallery Coming this Fall!

The office of Global Education and International Services and the Geography Program have collaborated with numerous departments across campus to create The World Maps Gallery, and we are excited to bring it to campus walls near you this fall!

In celebration of International Education Week (IEW) and Geography Awareness Week (GAW) (November 14– 18) we have curated 15 world maps showcasing aspects of human geography and physical geography that are sure to delight the eyes as well as challenge perceptions.

The World Maps Gallery of framed 2x3 foot maps will be permanently installed this fall throughout the Brighton Campus and shown as a temporary poster display at the Damon City Campus during IEW & GAW.  World maps will include the “upside down” map, the Peter’s projection map, maps showing sports popularity, lightning strikes, water stress, a wealth cartogram, and several others.  Most of these maps were created using geospatial (e.g., GIS) technology.

As in an art gallery or museum, the maps will have a display label explaining the map as well as a QR Code that students can scan with their smart phone, tablet or lap top to get links to additional information, videos, and ways to interact.  This is an innovative, interdisciplinary, and engaging way to get students – and us all - thinking about our connections to the world!

Check out the attached example of a map showing world obesity rates, the display label, and links that will show up when students scan the QR Code.

Contact Gale Lynch, Director of Global Education and International Services, for more information on ways to use these versatile, colorful maps in your curriculum or to learn more about additional upcoming events during International Education Week 2016.  If you are interested in learning more about GIS, mapping, and/or Geography contact Professor Jon Little (Chemistry and Geosciences.)
