MCC Upward Bound Celebrates Students

MCC Upward Bound (UB) is a U.S. Department of Education funded TRIO program.  UB’s collaboration with community partners results in our students being recognized.

On Thursday, March 24, the Rochester Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Lesli Myers-Small awarded two MCC Upward Bound students with the Susan B. Anthony Leadership Award. During the Women’s History Celebration, graduating seniors Noemi of Rochester Early College HS, and Morgan of Wilson Commencement HS, were recognized for their leadership, community service and academic achievements. Both are very active participants in the Upward Bound program.

Through the collaboration with the U of R Civic Life, Noemi was able to participate in the Experiencing Civic Life program, learning from college professors and gained new experiences from a college student’s perspective, later becoming a Youth Leader for the program. She also volunteered at Foodlink’s Curbside Market, interviewing shoppers about their experience and using the information she received to create a fictional character to represent someone who could benefit from using the Curbside Market. Noemi also participated in our collaboration with Binghamton University, being one of six students accepted into Girls Who Code. She learned from inspiring female role models to explore STEM careers. At the end, Noemi presented on what she learned during our UB summer program showcase. Noemi took part in the National Student Leadership Congress, “where TRIO pre-college students from across the United States and U.S. territories gather in Washington, D.C., to work together in finding innovative solutions to today's societal issues.”

Both Noemi and Morgan volunteered at Foodlink, helping pack boxes of food for local nonprofits to distribute to communities in need.  Through our collaboration with Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE), Morgan and Noemi participated in 4-H Ag Innovators Experience, receiving training from mentors to teach and lead the “Curbing Our Carbon Appetite Challenge” lesson to 3rd-8th grade students.

Morgan had the opportunity to attend both the Highland Hospital Explorers Program and Perry Initiative, which gave her the chance to learn about the medical field as well as participate in mock medical procedures. Morgan also volunteered at ZooBoo, handing out candy or leading various activities at the front of the zoo. Currently, Morgan has the opportunity to participate in an internship at the Seneca Park Zoo as an Events & Experiences Department Intern.  Working alongside the Seneca Park Zoo Society, Morgan assists in event management and fundraising, helping track inventory, plan events, and problem-solve.

Also, through our collaboration with CCE, one of our sophomores, David, was able to attend the World Food Prize New York Youth Institute at Cornell University.  The World Food Prize Youth Institutes “convene high school students, teachers, and experts to explore and solve local, national and global hunger and food security issues.”  Students in attendance were given the opportunity to present on ways to solve global challenges.  David was 1 of 55 students in the state who went to Cornell but the only student from Monroe County/RCSD.  David participated in a roundtable to discuss the country’s food security problems. He was also awarded the Borlaug-Ruan International Internship which will allow him to participate in a fully-paid research program abroad.

We at MCC Upward Bound are extremely proud of our program participants accomplishments!
