Tutoring Updates

Beginning in fall semester 2018, academic tutoring will be housed in an updated, centralized location at Brighton Campus. The Writing Center, the Center for Academic Reading, and the Academic Foundations Learning Center will be co-located in rooms 11-209, 11-211, and 11-113. This space will be called the Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center, or TAAC.

In addition, within the Learning Commons, the tutoring space will be called the Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center.

Under a centralized organizational structure, which will be overseen by the Director of Learning Support Systems (Pat Kennedy's future replacement), tutors will be trained using best practices, personnel can be consolidated thus providing more opportunity for expanded tutoring hours, and students, faculty and staff will know where to direct students to tutoring in a myriad of subjects.

New personnel titles, in addition to Professional Tutors, will include Peer and Paraprofessional Tutors, Academic Coaches and Writing Consultants. Academic Coaches will work with students to help them to develop effective reading and learning strategies and to become self-regulated learners. The role of the Coach is to help the student improve academically by identifying strengths and weaknesses and designing appropriate activities to improve their learning. Academic Coaches can help any student who comes into the TAAC.

Writing Consultants work with students to help them to develop effective writing strategies and to become self-regulated learners. Peer tutors will be current students who are deemed qualified to tutor certain courses; para-professional tutors will be tutors who have an Associate's or Bachelor's degree who are qualified to tutor certain courses.

We are planning to have an open house at the beginning of fall semester. Please check the Trib for updates.
