Update on the Status of MCC's Fall Plan

As we enter July, I am pleased to share an update with the College community on the status of MCC’s Return Plan.

As discussed in the June Town Hall meeting, with the relaxing of COVID-19 restrictions and draft updated guidance recently received from SUNY, MCC will increase operations in the fall to offer courses primarily face-to-face while continuing to build on our already robust online programs and continuing to offer hybrid/remote to meet students’ needs.

A task force of 24 faculty and staff members has been working tirelessly to make recommendations on a plan to safely and compassionately return to in-person learning and work (consistent with one of the five 2021-22 priorities set for MCC). The draft plan will be shared with the union associations and our shared governance groups today for review and comment. We want to ensure our plan is comprehensive to provide you with helpful guidance. Concurrently, it will be sent to the Monroe County Department of Public Health for review and endorsement. The goal is to distribute a finalized plan to the College community next week.

Students and their parents have been asking about MCC’s fall plan, including reaching out to the local news media for information. Yesterday, WHEC-TV aired a segment in which an MCC student and the parent expressed their desire for all MCC classes to be fully face-to-face in the fall. MCC was asked to respond. It offered an unexpected – albeit welcomed -- opportunity to inform of our intentions to more fully restore face-to-face course offerings and respond to ongoing demand for online and other modes of alternative delivery in hopes of increasing student enrollment and retention (another one of the MCC 5 Priorities for 2021-22). There is considerable interest from the public and the news media to learn details about MCC's fall plan. We understand many of you feel the same.

Despite what you may be hearing through social media and in the media, I want to assure you that the final fall plan is still in draft form until we have the benefit of consultation with our unions and shared governance groups. Thereafter, it will be finalized and shared with the entire College. Expediting a final plan benefits all.

Anyone who wishes to provide input may contact Return to Work Committee representatives, union association leaders, and/or shared governance group representatives.

Please regularly check the Daily Tribune and the website for updates. Together, we will inspire the way forward!

I wish you a safe holiday weekend.
