AAWCC Sponsors Perspectives on Aging: Dealing with the Facts

Fact #1:  We are all aging.

Fact #2:  With aging comes a variety of medical, emotional and psychological issues that must be dealt with at some point.

Fact #3:  Most of us choose to ignore Fact #1 and Fact #2 making us ill prepared for what the future may bring for us or a loved one.

Fact #4:  Communication and knowledge on the topic of aging will make the transition into the “golden years” successful for you and your family members

The MCC Chapter of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) is sponsoring the program Perspectives on Aging: Dealing with the Facts on Wednesday, November 9, 3:30-4:40 pm in Monroe A.

The issues around aging affect us all, whether for ourselves or for an elderly family member for whom we have taken on a care-giving role.  This interactive presentation will address such issues as:

o   Effective Communication: How to start the difficult conversation and improve your communication style!

o   Knowing Yourself: So you can begin to help others

o   Overview of Age Changes: What it’s like to get older

o   Common Concerns: Of the older adult and their children

o   Resources Available: What, when, where and how

o   Ideas for coping: To avoid burnout

o   Fear and Anxiety: What are our fears about getting older

o   Being a Care Giver for the Elderly

Come and interact with Sue DeRosa, Clinical Nurse Specialist, MS, APRN, BC at Unity Health, who finds this topic very near and dear to her heart.  DeRosa has 30 years experience working with and caring for older adults in a variety of settings, including long term care, the hospital and the community. As a middle-aged mother, daughter, wife, daughter-in-law, and nurse, she is an accomplished caregiver.  While our experiences are universal, our lives are individual. Please join us in making sense of this journey, getting out of denying the facts and into dealing with them!

Please RSVP to Marie Gibson at "mailto:mgibson@monroecc.edu"mgibson@monroecc.edu or Brighton extension 3436 to reserve your place.
