Science Friday Wows Upward Bound Students

MCC Upward Bound celebrated Halloween in style with delicious food, eye-ball punch, music, and multiple science experiments. AmeriCorps members Paul Stack and Mike Churnetski led the science charge, demonstrating experiments to students and offering hands-on interaction. From dry ice reactions to heat and water vacuums, the students were engrossed and engaged in learning about friction, chemical reactions, heat transfers, and phase changes. Junior Lennis Williams reported “I learned science tricks I can use in a bunch of ways in my life – at home, at school, and in my ROTC.” Senior Jyare Carter enjoyed the science too: “I had fun with the experiments! Mr. Paul made them entertaining.”

The staff had a great time as well, as staff member Mike Johnson noted “I love the fact that everyone seemed interested in the science workshops and it was exciting to see students try to figure out how each activity could be explained using scientific reasoning. I am glad to have the opportunity to work with and around so many smart people.” Johnson and other staff members are now looking to use other science equipment – including microscopes and hot plates – in future hands-on experiments with students.
