Award-winning Poet, Patricia Smith, Reading at Brighton Campus 3/12, 3/13

Patricia Smith will be doing a reading and book signing in the MCC theatre, Bldg 4 on Wednesday, March 12 at 7 pm.  The reading is free and open to the public.  On Thursday, March 13 at 2 pm she will be leading a discussion about the value of slam poetry in the MCC Forum; all students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to join this exciting conversation.

Smith is four-time national individual champion of the notorious and wildly popular National Poetry Slam, an energized competition where poets are judged on the content and performance of their work. No one else has won the title more than twice. Recognized as one of the world’s most formidable performers, she was featured in the nationally-released film “Slamnation,” and appeared on the award-winning HBO series “Def Poetry Jam.”  In 2007, Patricia won the first-ever Hurston/Wright Legacy Award in Poetry, a Pushcart, the Paterson Poetry Prize and the Chautauqua Literary Journal Award in Poetry. "Teahouse of the Almighty" was named the best poetry book of 2006 by About.com. And her next book, “Blood Dazzler” will be published by Coffee House in fall of this year.  She’s been touted as “a testament to the power of words to change lives.”
