Congratulations to MCC student Stacey Reed for winning the New York Times/ National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE) Student Essay Contest! Reed was recently notified that her essay was selected from entries sent in from community college students across the nation, including her fellow students in MCC’s new Emerging Entrepreneurs program!

For her accomplishment, Reed has won $1,000 and an invitation to speak at NACCE’s 6th annual national conference in Anaheim, Calif. in January 2009, including airfare and accommodations. As her home college, MCC will also receive $1,000.

Reed is participating in MCC’s new Emerging Entrepreneur program, under the direction of Assistant Professor Sherry Tshibangu, Business Administration/Economics. Reed’s concept of success for her business, Purple Glass Studio, is that it becomes a “self-sustainable, profitable, one-woman enterprise with the ability to create custom glass art for people and businesses for years to come.”

The purpose of the New York Time/NACCE Student Essay Contest is to recognize a community college student and discover firsthand how entrepreneurship education at community colleges benefits students. Entrepreneurially minded community college professionals gather at the annual conference to identify opportunities and create positive organizational and community change. Through entrepreneurial leadership, entrepreneurship education, and student business incubation programs professionals and students learn how their respective colleges can make an impact on the future economy.
