Passing of Richard Schroedel, MCC Retiree

I am saddened to share the news of the passing of Richard Schroedel, associate professor emeritus of sociology, on March 7 at age 73.

Richard joined MCC in 1975 as an adjunct assistant professor of sociology. By the time he was awarded tenure and a promotion in 1991, he had taught every course offered in the sociology curriculum.

During his years at MCC, he served the Sociology Department in valuable ways as the department’s only full-time faculty member at DCC and as the department’s principal liaison to the Criminal Justice Program. He was often commended for being creative in his approach to teaching and for continuing to experiment with new methods of making learning more effective.

Richard had a long track record of contributions to MCC. His service to the college included being faculty advisor to the Bisexual Gay and Lesbian Union, faculty senator, and chair/member of many committees.

Upon his retirement in 2002 after 28 years of distinguished service with MCC, Richard was accorded the rank of associate professor emeritus.

At his retirement celebration, one of his longtime colleagues remarked:

“Rich is someone who has always been a very dedicated teacher showing his interest and his dedication by supporting his students in his classes and in life. There is one student in particular who comes to mind. He was a good student who wanted so badly to be a Rochester police officer. Unfortunately being a young male and eventually getting in trouble seemed to put an end to that dream. Yet Rich stood by him – he wrote letters of support during this very trying time for this young man. Rich never gave up on him. Today, this man is happily married and a new father working in the security field! He attributes some of his success to Rich.”

We will share details of funeral arrangements in the Daily Tribune when information becomes available.
