MCC Co-Hosting Conference on New Technological Developments Impacting Higher Education

MCC and the New York Higher Education Initiative (NYSHEI) will host a free a half day mini-conference on October 4, 2004 in the Warshof Conference Center, Monroe B, between 9:00am and 1pm. This conference, New Directions for Community Colleges, will consider some new technological developments that are impacting higher education, including Open Source software, Digital Repositories, and a demonstration of 3D hardware and content. Please consider joining us either in person or by web cast for the conference. Lunch will be provided.

Summary: Open Source 101 - Participants will learn about the evolution of open source, its current state and its impact on higher education.  Among the open source initiatives that will be discussed is DSpace, a digital library for faculty intellectual work. Digital Repositories and Collaboration - Repositories are an example of an open source application that libraries are beginning to use to collect and manage a wide variety of new digital content. These repositories have great potential for showcasing the research, teaching and productivity of an institution.  3-D Hardware and Content - A  preview of the newest innovations in 3-D imaging sciences for the education world; a look at 3-D PCs and a 50" plasma screen that both allow 3-D perspective without glasses. Please contact Carol Wilkinson, x3019 or "mailto:cwilkinson@monroecc.edu"cwilkinson@monroecc.edu to register or for more information.

A Demonstration of the 3-D hardware and content will continue in Monroe B between 1:15 pm – 4:00pm on a drop in basis for anyone who is unable to attend the conference but is interested in this new development. No individual registration is required for this drop in session, however, it is requested that faculty who would like to bring a group of students contact Carol Wilkinson at x3019 with an estimated number of students and the time the group will stop by for a demonstration.

Please consider registering for the conference or stopping by for a demonstration.
