Celebrating AmeriCorps Week

What do 900,000 individuals across the country have in common? They all dedicated a year to serving their community and country by participating in AmeriCorps. March 9-13 the nation is celebrating AmeriCorps Week by sharing stories of service and recognizing the commitment of AmeriCorps members and alums. AmeriCorps programs serve with over 15,000 nonprofits, public agencies and community groups across the country to mentor children, fight poverty, rebuild after disasters, provide health services, strengthen the environment, and support veterans.

This year is a big one for AmeriCorps as the program celebrates its 20th anniversary. Rochester AmeriCorps has been serving strong since the birth of the program in 1994 and recently refocused its efforts on educational equity within the City of Rochester. Within one year 3.5 million disadvantaged youth were tutored, mentored or served by AmeriCorps members nationwide and Rochester AmeriCorps is looking to increase that number by recruiting members from the area to help build a safer, smarter and stronger community.
